Digitale Rekonstruktion der Originalausgabe «... Wer Muth und Lust hatte sich damit zu befassen,

J.E. Biester: Abschiedswort an die geduldigen Leser, 1811

The periodical "Berlinische Monatsschrift" as digital reconstruction

This digital reconstruction combines the contents of all 58 volumes of the periodical Berlinische Monatsschrift (including the succeeding Berlinische Blätter and Neue Berlinische Monatsschrift).

The periodical, published from 1783 to 1811 by Johann Erich Biester and Friedrich Gedike, quickly reached supraregional significance. It became important as the mouthpiece of the "Berliner Mittwochsgesellschaft", an elite group endeavouring reforms, formed by members of bourgeoisie and aristocracy including Friedrich d. Gr.
It became well-known as the place where the discussion "Was ist Aufklärung?" ("What is Enlightenment?") was argued out. It was also the preferred periodical of Immanuel Kant. The successor "Neue Berlinische Monatsschrift" was published by Friedrich Nicolai, another representative of the Enlightenment from Berlin, and was influenced by his numerous contributions.

The periodical contains 2.574 articles on 30.626 pages.

The making of this digital reconstruction involved:

  1. Scanning of the complete periodical from microfilm, by courtesy of the Georg Olms Verlags AG. Carried out by: Satzrechenzentrum Berlin
  2. Extraction of indexing data from the "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften". Carried out by: Satzrechenzentrum Berlin
  3. Data conversion (of the image files with standard software, of the indexing data from SGML/Ebind-DTD to BRS through PERL-scripts) and processing of the indexing data by Bielefeld University Library
  4. Generation of web interface (HTML, CGI-programming) by Bielefeld University Library

The searchable data are the result of the indexing project "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750 - 1815" of the Akademie der Wissenschaften Göttingen, which was supported by the Stiftung Volkswagenwerk and the DFG from 1975 to 1987.
If you have any corrections or additions to the "Index" data, please send an E-Mail to the Forschungsstelle "Index" of the Akademie der Wissenschaften Göttingen.

We are pleased to be able to place this digitally processed edition at the disposal of the general internet public.
