Simplified Loan Conditions

In order to help you keep track of your loan account and to make the renewal options more transparent, we have simplified the procedure. That's why we merged the six different existing loan conditions (loan periods) into three.
The third character of the bar code (e.g. 158/4127305+01) represents the loan condition.

Effective from October 18, 2004 the following three loan conditions apply:

All circulating items now can be renewed five times, provided that in the meantime it has not been reserved by somebody else. In this case it is inevitable to return the item in time.
Whether an item is circulating or not can be recognised by the colour of the call number label on the spine.

The equivalent of the conditions in plain text can be found in the library catalogue on clicking the button "Ausleihstatus" and in your loan account in the column "Medientyp".

A label exchange would mean an extensive work and require a considerable amount of money. Moreover, it would have been necessary to withdraw the media from circulation. That's why we decided to keep the now outdated ciphers 6,7, and 9 on the bar code labels, only the meaning has changed as explained above.

June 23, 2004: Journal Articles DatabasE JADE enhanced

The Journal Articles DatabasE JADE has recently been enhanced by some 60.000 records. The data have been compiled by Bielefeld University Library. The majority of the records originates from 45 scientific review organs and literary magazines of the 18th and 19th century which have been published in the German-speaking area. The library had organized and overseen the digitization of the journals within the scope of a project financed by the German Research Council ("Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft"). For further details on the project please refer to:
http://www.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/diglib/aufklaerung/
The other part of the database enhancement presents recent volumes of several journals covering the subject history with predominantly regional reference, which have only been partly included in JADE:

  • Forschung an der Universität Bielefeld
  • Ravensberger Blätter
  • Wismarer Beiträge
  • Lippische Mitteilungen
  • Mitteilungen des Mindener Geschichtsvereins
  • Zeitschrift des Aachener Geschichtsvereins
  • Zeitschrift für Hohenzollerische Geschichte
  • Heimatland Lippe
  • Archäologie in Ostwestfalen-Lippe
  • Archivpflege in Westfalen und Lippe

May 17, 2004: Free Transparent Carrier Bags for Laptops Provided at all Loan Desks

For security reasons the library doesn't permit to carry bags into the reading rooms (see below). This regulation applies for laptop bags likewise.

In order to facilitate the transportation of your laptop including its accessories without your personal bag we provide free transparent, reusable carrier bags for the use within the reading rooms. A further benefit of this new service is that you don't have to line up at the loan desk and present the content of your laptop bag anymore.
However, books, folders, briefcases etc. will have to be presented before leaving the library.

May 4, 2004: Viruses in E-Mails Supposedly Sent by the Library

We are increasingly confronted with e-mails which are supposedly sent from the library but are contaminated with computer viruses. The library addresses are manipulated and often don't even exist, e.g. "Register".
The text in these mails reads as follows: "Ihre Benutzernamen und Passwörter befinden sich im Anhang dieser E-Mail" and a file with the file extension ".pif" or ".zip" is attached.

These e-mails are not sent by the library and it is strongly recommended not and by no means to open them!
By the way: The library would certainly never send user names or passwords by mail.

Further information on faked e-mails at:
http://www.tu-berlin.de/www/software/show.shtml?virus/soberf
If you already have opened an attachment by mistake you will there find ways and means to eliminate the virus from your computer.

Well meant advice: do not open attachments which you do not have explicitly requested. Be always sure to have a virus scanner installed and keep it updated.

April 19, 2004: Information Day: The University Library as a Portal to the World of Scientific Information presents its Information Services

You are cordially invited to the library's presentation stand in the hall in front of the UniQ stage from 10 to 15 hrs. The library staff will be ready to demonstrate new library services and of course will show the well proven ones as well. It goes without saying that we have prepared our traditional well-assorted book flea market - a chance to browse and get a bargain.
Last but not least get yourself a glas of milk to energize your working day! Look and see: What do milk and the library have in common? They both get you going!

Jan. 30, 2004: Notes on the library's new website

Today Bielefeld University Library presents a newly designed website in a revised structure and with extented information services. A lot has changed but the address:
www.ub.uni-bielefeld.de

Our intention was to simplify the handling and to optimize the clarity of arrangement. We have changed to a left navigation which has in the meantime achieved common acceptance on the web. There you find the four main access points into our site. Besides we present important library services already on the homepage grouped together as "Short Cuts" or the "News". "My Library" summarizes the personalized services like the loan account and the individual settings of the metasearch. In addition to the already familiar navigation tool A-Z you will shortly be offered a site search option across the new web pages.

From the numerous services we have to offer, we want to emphasize three of them explicitly: The subject portals (can be accessed via the link: Digital Library), the completely new category Scholarly e-Publishing (access via: User Information & Services) and our new Help- and Info-System including the interactive tutorial about online searching and the virtual tour through the library (Link "Help" located in the upper navigation bar).

The value of the subject portals has increased significantly. All information, resources and services related to the scientific disciplines which are being taught at the university and the departmental libraries which mirror the study fields are now conveniently accessible in one spot. Contact persons, opening hours and service units are listed as well as information on the subjects, subject related databases and other ressources and links to the various faculties in Bielefeld.

The category "Scholarly e-Publishing" is still in the process of composition. The dicussion about the reorientation of scholarly publishing but constitutes an important topic which will concern academic libraries, scientists and the universities altogether. The library will work on this far-reaching and large scale issue jointly with the university and its members and successively produce and incorporate content for the pages.

The newly created help system which includes e.g. an interactive tutorial about online searching, several info clips, a virtual tour through the library and a dictionary of technical terms will give you comprehensive guidance and tips on how to use both the real and the digital library. A live chat option will be installed in the near future and will round the whole area off. The help system is located in the upper navigation bar and thus at hand on every page.

We appreciate your feedback. Please contact Barbara Knorn (knorn)

Jan. 21, 2004: Complete Relaunch of the Library's Internet Presence
