Restrictions Affecting Document Delivery

The German Bundestag and the Bundesrat have decided upon changes on the German Copyright Act which will restrict our online interlibrary loan and the document delivery services considerably. As of January 1, 2008 the libraries have to stop their service of electronic document delivery. Sending out scanned material as e-mail attachment is not feasible any more.
That's why, for the time being, your orders can only be fulfilled in print.
The print-outs can be collected as usual at the Central Loan Department of the library (A1-151).
We apologize for this inconvenience.

If you have any questions as concerns the changes and the new procedures, please contact in the Central Loan Department:
Sabine Jonscher and Claudia Jetzke (A1-151, phone: 4039) or via e-mail:

Further Journals of the German Enlightenment Online

Within the digitization project of Bielefeld University Library

"Retrospective Digitization of Scientific Review Organs and Literary Magazines of the 18th and 19th Century in the German-speaking Area"

27 further journals in electronic facsimile form have been made available since the beginning of this year. Both browsing and searching for particular articles contained in the journals is possible:

http://www.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/diglib/aufklaerung/

Currently 71 journals are provided in this project. Until the end of the two-year project in May 2008 (which is already the continuation of a former one), several more will follow. A title list of the journals to come is available on the project website.

In order to improve the comfort of use of our digitization web pages, we added an RSS-Feed option. This feed will supply news regarding newly integrated journals to the project pool as well as notes on new digitized imprints of the library's own collection ("Digitized Imprints").

This project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). It is implemented in cooperation with the publishing house Georg Olms Verlag AG, who supplied the microfiche editions of the journals and thus form the basis of the digitization and the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, who supplied the electronic edition of "Index deutschsprachiger Zeitschriften 1750-1815" which is necessary for subject indexing.

Bielefeld UL Scores High in Nationwide CHE University Ranking

Bielefeld University Library is assessed second best in a nationwide university ranking with an excellent overall score of 1,8.

Students assessed twelve different aspects of "their" university library. Bielefeld came off particularly well with the aspects "Availability of Literature", "Access to Electronic Journals", "Online User Service", "User Assistance", "Availability of Work Space in the Library" and "Opening Hours".

These current figures result from a students' evaluation of universities, where they were asked several questions concerning the library. too. The assessment is based on interviews with some 21,000 students from the so-called "scholarly disciplines", which include German Studies, English/American Studies, Romance Studies, History, Educational Science and Psychology.

This excellent assessment means both recognition of our achievements so far and motivation for the future. We will continuously optimize and enhance the concept of services we are committed to: we strive to combine a voluminous and up-to-date scope of information with user-friendly services and a modern learning and working environment. This is also what our new brand mark stands for: Information.plus!

Analogous to the payment for your photocopies, the amounts due for the print-outs are debited to your "Mensakarte" or your temporary TDM card. Printing is possible at any photocopier in the library, which is equipped with a card reading device.

Future Restrictions Affecting Document Delivery Services

In July 2007, the German Bundestag has decided upon changes on the German Copyright Act which will come into effect in October 2007. As a result, our online interlibrary loan and the document delivery services will probably undergo major restrictions.

Interlibrary loan orders on journal articles (current fee 1,50 Euro) will in most cases only be completed by letter or fax. That means, you will have to collect your orders at the library. The alternative option will be to order the article directly from the publisher. You will get the article online at the price of 25 - 30 Euro.

We will provide more and detailed information on future options as soon as possible.

BieColl: New OA Publication Option

The new repository "BieColl - Bielefeld eCollections" represents another component in the concept established by Bielefeld University to promote Open Access. Open Access means worldwide and free access to scientific information and, in this particular case, offers public access to publications prepared and issued by scholars from Bielefeld University or publications, Bielefeld University scholars contributed to.

The repository is intended for the publication of conference reports or abstract volumes, that are organized or published by research units or scholars of Bielefeld University. The documents exist mostly as full-text version and are entered and indexed as single documents. They can be searched and displayed as such, but also be presented as "Collection" of a particular event or context. The documents can be searched and found via search engines and other types of scientific indexes.
