Interface connects BiPrints repository and research database FoDa

The repository BiPrints (http://repositories.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/biprints/) stores permanently quality assessed full texts of scholarly works and assures visibility and ease of access on the internet. At the moment is comprises some 2500 publications from Bielefeld scholars of all faculties.
Recently, an interface between BiPrints and the university's research database FoDa has been realized. This new connection enables the additional upload of publications for existing or new FoDa entries. Users may add descriptive bibliographic data or can have the library do it. The full text will be uploaded and indexed automatically while a persistent address assigned to the full text will be inserted in the research database entry.
When a BiPrints record exists, it will improve the visibility of the text on the web and thus promote the citation frequency. On top of that longterm availability is guaranteed by the library.

Library Website Relaunch: New Corporate Design, New Services

Bielefeld University Library is happy to present its restructured and enhanced information services range:

The most obvious alteration concerns our website: we adopted the corporate design of Bielefeld University with its versatile system of colours, planes and pictures. As the range of services is growing continously, we realized the necessity to improve the transparency and user friendliness of our website and modernize it at the same time. The new corporate design which was introduced for the university as a whole offered a number of chances.

The right column presenting a context related support and information area on almost every page is an absolutely new concept. Here you will find tips, further information or reference to contentwise related pages.

But, the implementation of some database and search engine supported services with new functions - partially related to the Web 2.0 concept - has been a major challenge. Examples of what we have successfully carried out are the new library catalogue, the new publication server BiPrints and the search engine BASE.

According to the BITV guidelines (Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung) we have optimized our pages with regard to accessibility.
Almost all existing web addresses will stay in further use, so you don't have to worry about changing bookmarks.

Tell us what you think about the new web pages!

Library Catalogue: New Design and New Technology

The library catalogue is the most important tool for searching and finding items in the collection of Bielefeld University Library. The new website design was adopted to the appearance of the catalogue. Moreover, it underwent a complete Restructuring based on a new innovative technology. This new technology enables several new functions:

The catalogue can be searched from each library web page. Use the search field which is located in the top right position. Of course an advanced search form with detailed search options is provided, too. With the new catalogue we now hope to optimize the search options even more and better meet your search needs. We appreciate your comments!

Search Engine BASE Appears in New Design

In the course of the redesigning activities of the university library's website, the "Bielefeld Academic Search Engine" has undergone some changes in design, too. In addition we used the opportunity to add some new features to it. BASE is an international search engine which is operated by Bielefeld University Library since 2004. Metadata of freely accessible scientific documents (open access publications) stored on more than 1,050 different servers are collected, indexed and made available for searching. Among these servers are all major publication servers such as the famous arXiv and PubMed as well as servers of scientific instituitions such as the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft oder CERN. Of course the servers located in Bielefeld, BiPrints and the electronic journal Documenta Mathematica for example, are included.

Along with Google Scholar and OAIster, BASE is one of the world's most voluminous search engines of this kind and promotes concurrently the visibility of the open access publications created in Bielefeld. One of the highlights of BASE's features is a multilingual search option. On the basis of a language thesauraus it permits to search in one language and retrieve results in up to 20 other languages.
