For the university library it is already good tradition to participate in the annual library benchmarking BIX which is conducted by the Deutscher Bibliotheksverband (German Library Association).
So we did this year - for the eighth time by the way!
A total of 236 institutions including 74 academic libraries participated and competed for a nationwide ranking list. 17 performance indicators
in the areas services, usage, efficiency and progression build the calculation basis.
The result: Within the category of one-track university libraries, Bielefeld achieved the 6th rank. Among the North Rhine-Westphalian participants it is even second best behind ULB Düsseldorf. Just like last year, Bielefeld achieved a good rank in the categories services, usage and progression and thus is placed in the upper third in the group of all participants.

The trial phase for a new RFID detection system has been completed successfully. Starting with the beginning of the winter semester, we plan to put the new system into operation. It will help to better protect our library items against theft and users will be able to borrow and return items by themselves. For the trial, we had some 10,000 books in the Women's Studies collection furnished with RFID tags and a self-service station and a detection system were installed in area C1.
In the trial further departments and organizational units of the university were involved. The next step will be to convert all 2.2 million books and journal volumes shelved in the departmental libraries.
In order to carry out this task, 25 teams of 2 persons each, will be on their way through the departmental libraries, beginning at the end of July.
The university library plans to put four self-service stations
into operation which will be installed at the entrances of areas C1 and U1. Here the users may borrow or return books by themselves. The process can be sped up by charging several items simultaneously.
The new self-service intends to make things more convenient for our users; it will not cause a reduction of services or a limitation of service hours.
Starting in May 2011, we will test a new RFID detection system. For that reason a self-service station and a detection system will be installed in area C1. For the trial run RFID tags will be affixed to some 10,000 books in the Women's Studies collection. During the trial, the self-service station can only be used by library staff. As of June 2011 we will begin to furnish our whole collection which includes some 2.3 million items.
The new facility will not only optimize the protection of the books against theft. Students and academics can then borrow and return items by themselves. Borrowing and returning will be quick and easy as it will be possible to process multiple items simultaneously. Further details and handling advice for the new self-service station will be provided in good time.
Search and retrieve - the library catalogue and its added value by modern web technology.
On Thursday, 14 April from 90:00 to 14:30 hrs. the library presents the multifacted search and retrieval options of its web based library catalogue.
The catalogue is well known as a reliable search tool. Widely unknown might be the fact that up-to-date web technology makes it especially attractive as an all-rounder for external use.
Thousands of e-books and e-journals in full text versions can be read on screen.
Scans of tables of contents let you get an impression of books which are only available as printed copies.
Using the integrated book preview carried out by Google makes large parts of printed books visible online, too.
An Information Day is not complete without our Book Bazaar, which is always a chance to get a bargain. Of course, we will be glad to give you information about all the other services we provide. If you are lucky, you may even win one of the attractives prize in the Library Quiz Game. We are looking forward to having you join us!

In order to be able to handle the growing number of open access publications with BASE in the future as well, we worked intensively on the software transition from Microsoft FAST to open source Solr/Lucene in the last few months. The search interface is realized with VuFind (open source as well). At present, the new technology is only implemented in the test system, the so-called BASE Lab. The index has been completely updated and expanded and includes some 26.5 mill. documents from 1,700 sources now.
BASE is one of the world's most voluminous search engines especially for academic open access web resources, e.g. journal articles, preprints or theses. Open access means the free access to research literature and other material on the internat. Each user may use an open access publication free of charge.

The PubLister project ("Personal Publication Lists as University-wide Services") implements services that help researchers to make their publications available on personal webpages as well as exploring the pivotal role of repository-based solutions to operate across disciplinary and administrative boundaries within higher education and research institutions.
The PubLister project has been funded by the DFG for a period of two years.
We would like to invite you to the PubLister Symposium and Workshop on March 23rd and March 24th 2011 at Bielefeld University Library to jointly discuss the final results.

The database Nietzsche Online provides researchers and readers complete online access to the editions, interpretations and reference works on one of the most important philosophers. Users thus obtain access to a comprehensive database containing the research results of the last forty years. Apart from the authoritative editions of the works (KGW) and the letters (KGB), the database Nietzsche Online contains all De Gruyter publications on Nietzsche. Due to the cross-referencing to the full texts and the further interpretations, the headwords of the Nietzsche dictionary have become an even more indispensable basis for the research and understanding of Nietzsche's work.
