In the library students and employees of Bielefeld University and the University of Applied Sciences may use IT services provided by the two instituitions and access the internet with their private laptops.
The library is integrated into the area-wide WLAN of the university. Network cables are no longer necessary, but access is provided by particular radio adapters or radio cards.
Apart from the radio adapters and radio cards a HRZ (University Computing Center) account may be used. Get detailed information (in German).
You can use the Wireless LAN all over the library, in the main hall of the university, the Cafeteria, the "Westend", the lecture rooms, the "Audimax" and at all seminar rooms on second floor level.
Even if you do not own an adapter or a radio card for your notebook, you can use the WLAN at the library and other places inside the University. Adapters including installation guidelines and VPN Software on CD-ROM are available for borrowing at the Law Library (Entrance U1).
Locking devices for your laptops have been attached to the tables in all reading rooms. These clamps are intended to help prevent thefts. You only need to bring your own Kensington lock and cable to use it.
We highly recommend to lock laptops as the university assumes no liability.
Print jobs can be sent from a private laptop to the printers in the library. Precondition is the installation of a special print program. You can download it from the "Canon uniService - Service Center Druck & Kopie" web site (in German).
Analogous to the payment for your photocopies, the amounts due for the print-outs are debited to your Service-Card or your temporary Service Center card. Printing is possible at any photocopier in the library, which is equipped with a card reading device.
Before you use this service for the first time, you need to register your card once. What to do in detail, is described on Printing in the Library.
For questions or in case of problems, please turn to the Service Center who is responsible for this service (Office: Room U1-132, Office hours: Mon - Fri, 9:00 - 17:00 hrs).
The SMART Board is a combination of computer and chalkboard. It can be best applied to promote cooperation in small groups (SMART Board instructions for use).
Files and programmes on your private laptop are connected to the SMART Board via memory stick. For this operation the SMART Notebook Software is necessary. Moreover, conferencing of several laptops is possible. Precondition is the additional installation of the LinQ Software.
For security reasons the library doesn't permit to carry bags into the reading rooms. This regulation applies for laptop bags likewise.
In order to facilitate the transportation of your laptop including its accessories without your personal bag we provide free transparent, reusable carrier bags for the use within the reading rooms. A further benefit of this is that you don't have to line up at the loan desk and present the content of your laptop bag anymore.
However, books, folders, briefcases etc. will have to be presented before leaving the library.
