Where does my timetable come from?

All students have a personal timetable online in the electronic course catalogue (eKVV). But unlike at school, each pupil puts together his or her own timetable. The only exception is the medical students, who find a timetable in the electronic course catalogue (eKVV) at the beginning of the semester.

But how do you "build" such a timetable?

It's always hard to start, but the introductory courses offered by the Faculties always explain very well how to put together your first timetable. Therefore, the first recommendation is: Make sure you find out when your Faculty(s) welcomes new students and take advantage of every offer during the "introductory weeks". A good overview of the offers can be found on this page: "Introductory events" .

So no one has to come to the university with a perfect timetable, but there is nothing to stop you from starting earlier with the timetable in the electronic course catalogue (eKVV) and familiarising yourself with the courses on offer! The timetable can also be revised up to the start of lectures. A big advantage of creating a timetable early is: as soon as you have saved courses in the electronic course catalogue (eKVV), you can expect the first notifications for the selected courses.

You can find out how to create your timetable on this page.

Further help pages on the electronic course catalogue (eKVV) for students can be found on the Campus Support Portal

How do I create my timetable?

The first thing you should do is register with the system. To do this, use the login consisting of matriculation number and password that was sent to you by e-mail when you enrolled(subject: "First steps in campus management").

On this page you will find information on how to register for the electronic course catalogue (eKVV) with your matriculation login:

If you still lack the access data for registration - matriculation number and password from the Bielefeld IT Service Centre (BITS) - you can first register as a guest and later convert your guest account into a regular account.

The best place to start your personal timetable is the "Study Information" pages, where all degree programmes at the University are explained. Therefore, please register here:

On the "My study information" page, each staff, people's own degree programmes are displayed. A click on the degree programme name leads to the respective detail view of the degree programme. Remember: In the case of a combined bachelor's degree, you will see the study information page for each subject of your combination here (in the respective applicable version of degree programme), each subject should be viewed individually.

It is very important to know the rules according to which your degree programme works. In the right-hand side menu on each detail view, under the navigation, you will be displayed the following items, which are quite crucial for the organisation and successful degree and which map these rules:

  • The List of modules ("which modules are there in my subject?").
  • The examination regulations ("which examination regulations do I have to follow?")
  • The so-called "subject-specific regulations" ("which rules apply to my subject?")

Degree programmes are regulated by examination regulations.

There are uniform examination and study regulations for the Bachelor and Master degree programmes.

The subject-specific regulations (FsB for short) of the individual study programme variants regulate details of the subjects. You should read the FsB carefully, as they contain the rules according to which your degree programme is structured and list the Modules to be studied and the academic achievements to be achieved. You can find the FsB for your degree programmes in the detail view of the degree programme in the study information via the side menu.

Tip: For first-year students, these documents are often difficult to read. Nevertheless, it is important to familiarise yourself with them early on in order to be able to plan your studies and to become an expert in your own studies!

The lists of modules linked in the study information and the module detail pages linked there provide you with very precise help desk information for the preparation of the timetable, among other things.

  • Which courses are recommended for the first subject related semester?
  • What types of courses are planned?
  • What is Obligation and what is Compulsory optional subject?
  • Which academic achievements must be completed?

The List of modules is linked directly to the study information pages in the navigation on the right and is a simplified tabular representation of the modules taken from the FsBs of the individual subjects.

If you have called up the List of modules or the Module description via the study information page, the link"Lehrangebot im eKVV" in the right-hand menu will take you directly to the appropriate page of the electronic course catalogue (eKVV).

The electronic course catalogue (eKVV) shows which courses are offered by whom in the respective semester. It also contains location and time information as well as bibliographical references for individual courses, information about their assignment to Modules, about the type of course (seminar, tutorial, lecture), the acquisition of Credit points, etc.

You can obtain a Detailed view with information on an individual course by clicking on the line of the course from the course overview.

If you are registered on the electronic course catalogue (ekvv), click on the "Save" icon next to the event you would like to add to your timetable, or select the item "Add event to timetable" on the detail view of an event.

Repeat this procedure for each event you would like to attend in order to register for the selected events and permanently save your personal semestertimetable.

If you add events to your timetable, you will be taken to the attendance list for this event. If the number of places in the course is limited for capacity reasons, this will be displayed in the electronic course catalogue (ekvv) for the course. If you include the event in your timetable anyway, your participation status will be displayed in the timetable.

If several compulsory courses are taking place at the same time, please seek advice from the Student Counselling Service of the subject(s). You can find them under "Persons to contact" on the page "My study information".

There is no binding requirement for the minimum number of courses you must attend. If you want to complete your studies quickly, you should acquire a total of approx. 30 credit points (LP) per semester in order to achieve a consistent workload throughout your entire studies. You can find out how many credit points are awarded in the module descriptions or in the Detailed view of the respective course under "Subject assignments".

Further information, in particular on registration for courses with limited participation, can be found directly on this page.

Important:

Once you are registered, you can always access and edit your timetable via the "My electronic course catalogue (eKVV)" menu.

To switch back and forth between the electronic course catalogue (eKVV), study information, BIS examination management, fee and status portal and the learning platforms, or to access the various information services for students, the "My University Portal" is a very good starting point!

You register there once and then see news and information tailored to your degree programmes. The portal can be tailored to your own interests and needs, making it a very practical virtual entrance door to the organisation of your studies.

A well-maintained timetable can be used wonderfully as a calendar in the "Meine Uni" app, which is a good companion for the day on campus:

Questions and answers (persons to contact)

If you have put together your timetable and still have questions about it, you can discuss it with the (Student) Counselling Service of the respective subject.

You can find the contact details on the study information page of the respective subject on the right under "Persons to contact".

You can also use the introductory events to ask questions. Further information on the electronic course catalogue(eKVV) can be found here.

"getting started right." offers, among other things, advice, orientation and support for prospective students and students in their first year of study. You can find more detailed information on the website indicated. Under "Counselling and orientation" you will find the "getting started. - Counselling in the Faculties. It will strengthen the Student Counselling Service in many Faculties for the next few years.

Departmental student representative committees usually comprise the students of a Faculty. Their work consists primarily of representing subject-specific student interests. Students who are active in the departmental student representative committees often organise the introductory events and are also happy to help with other aspects of Course start.

You can find an overview of all the departmental student representative committees at the university in the university's directory of staff, people and departments (PEVZ):

At the central level, the Student body, which is formed by the students of Bielefeld University as a whole, has the General Assembly and the Student Parliament as its most important organs. The "executive body" of the Student Parliament is the AStA [Student Union].

You will receive your UniCard, which is also your OWL ticket, after enrolment (approx. 2 - 3 weeks after paying the social fee). You will need a digital photo in passport format for your UniCard. Further information on obtaining and using the UniCard can be found on the portal. The OWL-Ticket is valid from 01.09. or 01.03. The NRW-Ticket is provided electronically. You can print it out or save it on your smartphone. It is only valid together with the UniCard. Questions about the semester ticket can be answered by the transport group.

If you would like to change subjects after enrolment or have questions about your student status, you can contact the Info Point in the University Hall or the Student Office directly.
