Project DEAL

Project DEAL, which is funded by the Alliance of Science Organizations in Germany, is negotiating nationwide licensing agreements with the publishers Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley with the aim of providing participating institutions with permanent full-text access to the complete journal portfolios of the respective publishers and offering them the possibility of having works published in open access.

DEAL Agreement with Wiley

The first DEAL agreement was concluded in early 2019 – with Wiley. On the recommendation of the University Library and the Library Committee, Bielefeld University Rectorate has decided to participate in the agreement between DEAL and Wiley.

The advantages for Bielefeld University’s scientists are as follows:

  • reading access to approximately 1,600 (instead of previously 163) Wiley journals,
  • the possibility of publishing their works free of charge in open access in the vast majority of Wiley’s hybrid and gold open access journals,
  • increased visibility and easy re-usability of publications while respecting the rights of the Bielefeld authors in their articles,
  • no administrative efforts in relation to open access publication fees for articles by Bielefeld authors in Wiley journals, as the University Library will bear the costs and handle the processing.

Please note that additional costs like "colour charges" or "pages charges" will be charged to the authors.

DEAL Agreement with Springer Nature

At the beginning of 2020 another agreement was concluded – this time with Springer Nature. On the recommendation of the University Library and the Library Committee, Bielefeld University Rectorate has decided to participate in the agreement between DEAL and Springer.

The advantages for Bielefeld University’s scientists are as follows:

  • reading access to approximately 3,000 Springer Nature journals,
  • the possibility of publishing their works free of charge in open access in the vast majority of Springer Nature’s hybrid and gold open access journals,
  • increased visibility and easy re-usability of publications while respecting the rights of the Bielefeld authors in their articles,
  • no administrative efforts in relation to open access publication fees for articles by Bielefeld authors in Springer Nature journals, as the University Library will bear the costs and handle the processing.

Please note that additional costs like "colour charges" or "pages charges" will be charged to the authors.
