Off-campus Access

As a member of Bielefeld University you can access licensed library services (subject databases, e-books) from off-campus via Shibboleth or VPN.

More and more external providers are enabling access to licensed products and services via the authentication service Shibboleth. If, for example, a publishing house offers access via Shibboleth, members of Bielefeld University can log in with the provider site with their BITS account and directly access products oder services licensed by us.

Further information on access can be found on the BITS website:

What is VPN?

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a software that allows students and staff of Bielefeld University to log in worldwide with their BITS identification from any Internet access point. They are then virtually on campus and can also use the services free of charge whose access is normally restricted to the campus.

What do I need VPN access for?

The library has purchased (licensed) many products or services and also allows you free access via VPN. These include:

  • Hundreds of subject databases
  • Tens of thousands of e-journals
  • Hundreds of thousands of e-books, including textbooks from all subject areas

How can I use VPN?

Members of Bielefeld University can download the necessary VPN software from the web pages of the Bielefeld IT Service Center (BITS).
