Modular Clinician Scientist Programme (CSP)
A multi-stage Clinician Scientist Programme is intended to enable a continuous, modular clinical-scientific career path "from doctorate/Phd studies through specialist medical training to professorship".
The programme enables protected research periods for the implementation of one's own scientific objectives accompanied by the leadership of a working group of the Medical School OWL, binding target agreements and an accompanying qualification programme including career mentoring.
A special focus is placed on the compatibility of family, clinical work and research as well as on the promotion of female scientists. Among other things, they can take advantage of the university's mentoring programme for female doctors, movement.med, and apply for the Female Clinician Scientist Fellowships (see below).

- Female Clinician Scientist Fellowships
The Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia supports measures to improve equal opportunities and the compatibility of a career in science and family life at universities with the programme "Seizing opportunities, promoting research and family - programme for equal opportunities in university medicine in North Rhine-Westphalia (FF-Med)".
With the Female Clinician Scientist Fellowships (pilot phase), the Medical School OWL aims to contribute to improving gender equality and the compatibility of scientific careers, clinical work and care tasks. The aim of the funding is to partially release female clinician scientists from clinical tasks in order to create protected and plannable research time and thus excellent conditions for the (further) development of a clinical-scientific career and for the advancement of a post-doctoral habilitation.
The focus of the funding is to support clinically active women in the UK OWL in (re)starting research activities to build their scientific profile on the way to post-doctoral habilitation. The funding is intended to support female clinician scientists on their clinical-scientific career path.
The sponsorship enables the preparation, realisation or degree of their own scientific objectives (e.g. projects, applications, publications) under the supervision of the head of the applicant's specialist clinic as well as another head of a working group at Bielefeld University and is intended in particular to promote the progress of a post-doctoral habilitation.
All female doctors with a doctorate who would like to (re)intensify their scientific activities and are employed in patient care at a university clinic of the UK OWL at the planned start date of the funding programme (see guidelines for exceptions) and have started or already completed their specialist medical trainingare eligible to apply. Applicants can either be at the beginning of their scientific career and qualification phase after doctorate/Phd studies or pursue the goal of intensifying or resuming their research activities after a reduced phase in order to advance a post-doctoral habilitation.
You can apply for primarily protected research time of 20-50% over a project duration of 3-18 months (maximum funding period can be found in the guidelines of the respective call for proposals). The allocation of research time can be customised in consultation with the clinic management and the additional scientific support according to the requirements of the planned research project and the individual needs of the applicant. Funding of up to €5,000 can be applied for. The maximum funding amount per applicant is €50,000 (leave of absence + material resources).
- Digital Clinician Scientist
The aim of the funding line for Digital Clinician Scientists is to partially release doctors with an interest in digital medicine from clinical duties in order to create freedom for research activities and thus promote the start of a scientific medical career parallel to specialist medical training. The thematic focus is on research into medical practice with digital health applications ("app on prescription"), digital projects in the area of Covid-19/infection/pandemic and artificial intelligence.
The funding enables the implementation of an own scientific objective accompanied by the head of the working group "Digital Medicine" as well as the specialist clinic management embedded in a qualification programme for innovative research and teaching.

Digital Clinician Scientist - Entry Fellowship
The call for applications was aimed at doctors in their 1st to 4th year of specialist training who have completed or are about to complete their doctorate/Phd studies and who would like to work in Working Group "Digital Medicine" with the support of a leave of absence for a short period (usually 50% over 2x6 months; but at least 30% with a corresponding extension). This is intended to enable an entry into a scientific and medical career path as a digital clinician scientist by preparing the implementation of their own scientific projects. In addition to the leave of absence, material resources of max. 2,500 € can be applied for. The maximum funding amount per staff, people is €50,000 (leave of absence and material resources).
Early-stage Digital Clinician Scientist
Applications were open to doctors who are in their 1st to 4th year of specialist training and whose doctorate/Phd studies have been completed or are demonstrably close to completion. The programme sponsors a doctor who is supported by the working group "Digital Medicine" to carry out their own research projects in digital medicine (usually 50% time off over a maximum of 3 years). In addition to the leave of absence, personnel and material funds of max. 5,000 € per year per staff, people can be applied for. The maximum annual funding amount per person is €50,000 (leave of absence, personnel, material and travel expenses).
The prerequisite for funding in both funding modules was a clear scientific objective, a completed or shortly to be completed doctorate/Phd studies, existing or prospective employment at the UK OWL or in a practice in OWL, including participation in specialist medical training (1st to 4th year) and the approval of both the responsible clinic management or employer in the practice and the head of working group "Digital Medicine".
