current news

Here you will find current information events.

Dear prospective students,

Welcome to our website! Here you will find all the important information about the admission procedure and the selection criteria for studying medicine at Bielefeld University.

An over-the-shoulder shot of a student using her laptop to find out about the application procedure on the website of the Foundation for University Admissions.

For German and EU applicants, the application procedure is centralised via the Foundation for University Admissions. An application directly via the university is not possible and will not be assessed.

Applications for the first subject-related semester are only possible for the winter semester .

Please take into account the different deadlines for applications for new and old graduates, which you can find via the Foundation for University Admissions under deadlines.

If you have any questions about the application process, you can contact the application support team at the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung.

Selection criteria

Graphic of the selection criteria

Special cases in the application process

Special cases include: Cases of hardship/hardship cases, non-equivalent international applicants, second degree applicants and applicants who have committed themselves to practising their appointment in areas of special public need on the basis of corresponding regulations (e.g. rural doctor quota).

We hope that you will benefit from this information and wish you every success with your application!

Frequently asked questions and answers ...

... on the application and admission procedure

All state-funded medical study places in Germany are allocated by the Foundation for University Admissions. Comprehensive information on the admission procedure is available at hochschulstart.de.

Prospective students and applicants are strongly advised to visit this site regularly to keep up to date with the current deadlines for applications.

Further information on the selection criteria for the study places available at Bielefeld University, the central aptitude quota and the university's selection procedure can be found here.

As all study places in medicine are allocated centrally via the Foundation for University Admissions, the general deadlines of the Foundation for University Admissions apply. The deadlines are usually between May and July, whereby it is important that interested parties inform themselves in good time about the deadline that applies to them.

Please take into account the different deadlines for old and new high school graduates.

Please also note the deadlines for registration for the Test for Medical Degree Programmes (TMS). As a rule, registration for the spring TMS is possible from 3 January to 31 January and for the autumn TMS from 4 July to 31 July. But here, too, interested parties should regularly check the current dates and deadlines .

This is generally possible. It is possible to gain admission to university as a professionally qualified (person). The application period for the winter semester is from 1 January to 1 April of the same year. Here you can find further information for a degree programme for professionally qualified (person).

Please note that the Medicine/state exam(ination) degree programme is integrated into the nationwide admission procedure.

Applicants according to §§ 2 and 3 BBHZVO can take an access examination for degree programmes in nationwide selection procedures of the Foundation for University Admission (hochschulstart.de) to improve their chances of admission. The grade of the access examination is then taken into account in the selection process. Otherwise, master craftsmen and those who have completed advanced training as well as applicants with a subject-specific qualification can only participate in the selection procedure for medicine/state examinations(ination) with a grade of "sufficient (4.0)".

To improve your chances of admission, it is also recommended that you take the Test for Medical Degree Programmes (TMS).

In consideration of applicants who do not yet have a German degree, a maximum of three per cent of medical study places are awarded to applicants who have already completed a degree and are therefore applying for a second degree. Detailed information can be found in the information brochure of the Foundation for University Admissions"Supplementary information for applications for degree programmes with nationwide admission restrictions".

Information on applying for a second degree programme for academic reasons can be found in the information brochure "Supplementary information on applying for degree programmes with nationwide admission restrictions".

Contacting and commissioning the assessment: You can apply for the assessment required for your application via the Student Advisory Service. Please submit the application for an assessment, proof of completion of your first degree programme, a meaningful description of your academic reasons for pursuing a second degree in medicine and relevant supporting documents in electronic form to studienberatung.medizin@uni-bielefeld.de. If you have any questions, please also contact the Student Advisory Service.

You will also find the application form "Admission to a second degree programme for academic reasons" in the information brochure "Supplementary information on applying for degree programmes with nationwide admission restrictions".

The application for the assessment must be submitted separately from the application and must be submitted to the Medical Student Advisory Service of the OWL Faculty of Medicine by 31 May for the respective winter semester. The assessment will be sent directly to Hochschulstart.

No, since the summer semester 2022, waiting semesters are no longer taken into account.

The Foundation for University Admissions allows universities to choose from a catalogue of criteria when setting admission criteria. In this respect, previous vocational training, professional activities as well as practical and voluntary work (including the Voluntary Social Year and the Federal Voluntary Service) can be taken into account in the application.

Which criteria are taken into account at Bielefeld University can be found online here.

Anyone wishing to study human medicine in Germany should always take one or more subject-specific entrance tests (e.g. TMS, HAM-Nat or HAM-SJT). Only 30 per cent of all study places are awarded by the Foundation for University Admission solely on the basis of the Abitur grade. For 70 per cent of study places, a good score in the entrance test selected by the university can be an advantage.

Bielefeld University includes the Test for Medical Degree Programmes (TMS) in the university's selection process as well as in the additional entry quota.

As soon as you have received an offer of admission/admission offer from the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung and have accepted it within the deadline (!), you will receive a notice of admission from Bielefeld University. This will explain the enrolment process and the documents to be submitted.

It is not possible to swap study places before the start of the semester. In the state exam(ination) in Medicine, a change of study place can only be made in the higher subject-related semester. In accordance with Section 4 (4) of the study and examination regulations for the model degree programme in Medicine, due to the special structure of the degree programme at Bielefeld University, the change will extend the duration of study. It is therefore generally not advisable to change to a higher subject related semester.

...to the nursing service (KPD)

According to the licensing regulations for doctors, a nursing service of three months must be completed before the first section of the medical examination (ÄApprO 2002, § 6 Krankenpflegedienst): ÄApprO 2002 - Approbationsordnung für Ärzte (gesetze-im-internet.de)

It is advisable to complete at least part of the nursing service before starting your studies. This will give you an insight into your future professional environment, can help you decide whether or not to study medicine and will free up your time during your studies.

The medical licence regulations for doctors regulate the following (ÄApprO 2002, § 6 Krankenpflegedienst):
ÄApprO 2002 - Approbationsordnung für Ärzte (gesetze-im-internet.de)

Further information can be obtained from the Medical Examination Office .
