Approval to the Master of Education

Admission to the Master of Education program at Bielefeld University is open to graduates of a first university degree program with a standard period of study of at least six semesters, provided that the degree program is relevant to the teaching qualification to be pursued (in particular, a permissible combination of subjects including educational sciences). The details of the admission regulations can be found in § 4 of the Master's Regulations (MPO Ed.).

The application for a place in the Master of Education must be made within the application deadlines via the online application portal of Bielefeld University. Explanations on the general procedure of the Master's application can be found under Campus Support. The procedure within the portal distinguishes between graduates of a teaching-oriented Bachelor's degree at Bielefeld University within the framework of the 2011 study model and all other graduates.

Applicants who have completed a teaching-oriented Bachelor's degree at Bielefeld University within the framework of the 2011 study programme model or who will have completed it by the start date of the semester in which they wish to enrol for the appropriate Master's degree should apply for the continuation of their version of degree programme variants from the Bachelor's degree via the online application portal of Bielefeld University within the deadlines. For this purpose, please log in with your Bielefeld University access data. The system will then automatically recognize whether you are applying for a Master's program that matches your current enrolment, or whether you are changing.

A master course is suitable if the Bachelor course for the corresponding teaching profession is to be continued with the corresponding subjects and combinations (major subject, subject, core subject or minor subject). For students in this group, no documents need to be attached to the application (exception: DLRG and First Support for Sports Science). If you already have the Bachelor's transcript, upload it as part of the application; otherwise, present the transcript to the Student Office upon receipt of the notice of approval during the enrollment process.

If you are using the transition to the Master as an occasion for a change, e.g. to change from G to G/ISP or to change your core and minor subject, follow the instructions in the section Approval for External / Additional Applicants.

Special case: Approval after temporary exmatriculation

Even if you exmatriculate or enrol in another degree programme between your Bachelor's degree and the start of the M.Ed. programme, you are still considered an internal applicant if your Bachelor's degree originates from Bielefeld. The approval requirements described in the section Approval for graduates of a teaching-oriented Bachelor's degree at Bielefeld University apply, and you do not need to upload any documents as described in the section Approval for external/other applicants. Since the application and status portal no longer recognises you as an internal student after a temporary de-registration, please upload a PDF with the note "Application after temporary de-registration" at the points where mandatory uploads are required.

There is, however, one exception: If you have taken up a course of study at another university in the meantime and have had the academic achievements there credited to you, you will be considered an external applicant.

Prospective students who wish to be admitted to the Master of Education on a basis other than a suitable teaching-oriented Bachelor course at Bielefeld University should apply within the deadlines via the online application portal of Bielefeld University. An application as early as possible at the start date of the application procedure is advisable due to the processing time.

For approval for the Master of Education, you must provide proof of a relevant first university degree. The degree is relevant if it essentially corresponds to the Bachelor course at Bielefeld University with the respective professional goal of the corresponding teaching profession with a corresponding choice of subjects.

You would have studied essential parts if you do not lack more than 30 LP of so-called alignment studies in total; if necessary, you could still make up for these during the M.Ed. program.

Incomplete or incorrect documents will result in rejection!

If you have already completed a practical semester with preparatory training, please note the instructions for recognition of the practical semester.

Instructions for the online input help:

Please be sure to seek advice BEFORE submitting your application:

Formal questions (e.g., about the documents to be submitted, how to fill out the listing, the application process): Birgit Reinke (letter group A-G) and Susann Rüdiger (letter group H-Z).

Content-related questions, special cases: Kerstin Harmening

Prospective students who wish to be admitted to a higher subject related semester in the Master of Education, please follow the instructions above under "Approval for external / further applicants". The approval procedure automatically checks whether academic achievements for the M.Ed. can be recognized. Further applications for recognition to the Faculty are not necessary. Please note the deadlines for applications.

For the Master Haupt-, Real- Sekundar- und Gesamtschule mit Intgrierter Sonderpädagogik (HRSGe/ISP) there is a special feature regarding the preceding Bachelor course: While in all other versions of degree programme it can be assumed that as a rule the study programme variant from the Bachelor is continued 1:1 in the Master, students with a Bachelor degree in the HRSGe variant have the possibility to continue their studies in the HRSGe/ISP variant. This master's degree ends with a degree for HRSGe. However, in contrast to the Master's degree in Elementary School with ISP, it does not automatically open approval for the additional Master's degree in Educational Science of Integrated Special Needs Education with the Career Perspective Teacher for Special and Inclusive Education / Primary Schools. According to the current legal situation (Lehramtszugangsverordnung - LZV - 2009), this is only possible under the following conditions:

  • One of the subjects studied is either German Studies or Mathematics.
  • The other subject is one of the following subjects: English Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Protestant Theology, German Studies, History, Art, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Sports Science.

The transition from the Bachelor HRSGe to the M. Ed. HRSGe/ISP does not count as a transfer, so please refer to the information in the section Approval for graduates of a teaching-oriented Bachelor at Bielefeld University.

Entry or change of program

After you have applied, a notice of approval will be made available to you via the status and application portal. As soon as your notice of approval is online, you will receive a notification to the e-mail address stored in the portal (you must click on this accordingly during the application).

Applicants with a suitable teaching-oriented Bachelor's degree from Bielefeld University will receive their notice of approval immediately after submitting their application. An exception is made for Applicants with a Sports Science degree: In this case, the notification will only be issued after the DLRG and First Aid certificates have been checked.

All other Applicants will receive their notice of approval after completion of the degree. This can take four to six weeks.

Once you have received a positive notice of approval and your Bachelor's degree certificate is available, you can enroll or change your programme. If you are already studying at Bielefeld University, apply for a change of programme. If you are transferring to Bielefeld University from another university for a Master's degree, please submit an Application for enrolment.
