Windows print services

Provision of a central platform for Windows printing services. This can be used for the integration of network printers at PC workstations in faculties and departments. The assignment of permissions for the use of the printers is based on the BITS AD directory service.

Scope of services

Department for setting up printers on workstations, updating printer drivers, managing print jobs and assigning print permissions.

Preferably, printers are integrated that are supported by the universal drivers of the respective manufacturers, e.g.

  • HP Universal Printing (PCL5, PCL6, PostScript)
  • Kyocera Classic Universal Driver KPDL
  • RICOH UniversalDriver (PCL6, possibly PCL5 or PostScript)
  • EPSON Universal Print Driver
  • Samsung Universal Print Driver

and other comparable drivers from other manufacturers.
Printer-specific drivers, especially from consumer devices, may not be suitable for use on a print server. In this case, BITS support for such printers may be rejected.

Deployment times

2 working days from the date of requesting the service.

Requirements

Target group

  • Faculties and departments of Bielefeld University

Request

A request for the service can be made through the decentralized EDP supervisor.

Costs

Free service for all faculty and departments as part of basic services.

Costs may apply for customization.

Duty to cooperate

Use of this service requires use of the BITS Active Directory server.

Request

Request network printer for a faculty

-> Windows-printing-services-network-printer-for-a-faculty-application.pdf

Explanation of the form

1. manual DHCP entry for the printer

  • Hostname (can be chosen freely, but should start with the start date of the department, e.g. uhrz-*)
  • Domain name (usually "dhcp.uni-bielefeld.de", the subdomain of the faculty/department is also possible)
  • network (VLAN or socket number)
  • MAC address

2. required information for the printer

AD group of printer administrators:
A group in the Active Directory that is allowed to administrate the printer.

Department:
Name of the faculty/department.

Printer manufacturer:
Name of the manufacturer (e.g. Hewlett Packard).

Printer model:
Specify as accurately as possible (e.g. Officejet Pro 8500 A0809 Series).

Printer host name (DNS):
Specify the previously requested hostname fully qualified (e.g. uhrz-hp-laserjet5000.dhcp.uni-biefefeld.de).

Queue name:
Should be as identical as possible to the host name (e.g. uhrz-hp-laserjet5000). This name will eventually be displayed in Windows.

E-mail address of the EDP supervisor for the comment field of the printer:
Primary contact for the network printer, which is stored in the comment field.

The printer must be switched on and accessible via the DNS name, since a test page is printed during setup.

Delete printer from print server
To delete a printer, the IT supervisor must inform the Service Desk (servicedesk@uni-bielefeld.de). The service desk will then sign out the network printer from the server and remove the manual DHCP entry.
