sciebo - the campus cloud
sciebo - a neologism of science and box - is a cloud storage service by and for universities in NRW that enables the storage, sharing and synchronization of university-related data. The special feature: Unlike commercial providers, the data is processed exclusively by the universities themselves and strictly in accordance with the German Data Protection Act. This service can be used by students and employees.

- 30 GB storage volume per user (expandable to up to 500 GB for employees)

- Simultaneous work on Office documents in the browser possible
- Overleaf (collaborative LaTex editor) as a browser application

Duty to cooperate
The university's network drives are to be used primarily for official data.
Official data can also be stored on Sciebo, taking into account the need for protection[1]. Data with high protection requirements must be encrypted[2]. Data with very high protection requirements may not be stored on sciebo[3].

3) You will be redirected to the login page for web applications at Bielefeld University. Enter the BITS username and the web password there.

.- What data may I store in sciebo?

Do the operators of sciebo carry out a data backup?
sciebo does not have a backup of the data, i.e. the data stored here is not secured by the continuous creation of backup copies. However, the storage systems are very well protected against data loss by technical measures. Data that you have accidentally overwritten or deleted yourself can usually be restored via the recycle bin in the web interface or on your local system, or via the versioning function. However, this level of protection is not comparable to a classic backup. Not least for this reason, official data should continue to be stored primarily on the university's network drives. Data requiring a high level of protection may only be stored on these network drives. Further regulations result from the IT security policy for cloud storage.
- How can I access sciebo?
There are a variety of ways to store, synchronize or share data with others:

Download the different ones from the clients.
Note:
Currently, desktop clients cannot sync files that contain a colon in the file name. Currently, the only workaround is to rename the affected data and replace the colon with another character.- How can I recover deleted files?

Employees are allowed to increase the storage space. This is possible even via My.Sciebo. There under "Increase account > volume".
- Why can't I find some staff, people when sharing data?
Why can't I find some staff, people when sharing data?
The most common cause is that staff, people with whom the data is to be shared, have registered but have not yet made an initial registration on the web interface (https://uni-bielefeld.sciebo.de).
Only with this registration the account is activated in Sciebo.In the case of guests or staff, people from other departments, a nightly check of the address books must also be waited for.
- How can I create a guest account?
Guest accounts can be created via the my.sciebo portal. The guests are entered with an e-mail address. This is only possible with addresses that do not belong to one of the participant institutions (e.g. @uni-bielefeld.de, @uni-muenster.de). Detailed instructions can be found on the sciebo help page.

[1] A distinction is made between normal, high and very high protection requirements. Which category the data falls into depends on its confidentiality, integrity and availability requirements. The template for categorising data can be downloaded here .
[2] The IT supervision team can provide support with technical questions about encryption.
[3] Sciebo is technically designed so that the data can be synchronised on any number of IT devices. This is practical in everyday working life but can jeopardise the security of the data, e.g. through security gaps on or the loss of IT devices. For this reason, data with very high security requirements is not suitable for Sciebo.
