Doctorate
Pursuing a doctorate after completion of a Master degree, opens the opportunity for an academic career and provides valuable additional qualifications also for many non-academic positions. Doctoral candidates engage in independent scientific research for several years which results in a doctoral thesis.
The Faculty of Business Administration and Economics offers various options for doctoral studies. In addition to individual doctoral studies, which is open to both external doctoral candidates and academic staff at a chair, the faculty also offers the structured doctoral study programme Economics and Management which is organized by the Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management (BiGSEM).
Doctorate at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics
An individual doctorate is characterised by a researcher working on a doctoral topic for the next few years, writing a (doctoral) thesis (= dissertation). ‚Free‘ here means that the doctoral candidate does not follow a structured doctoral programme with compulsory courses and a curriculum. As a rule, an individual doctorate is accompanied by a research assistant position that is assigned to a department/chair. However, it is also open to external doctoral candidates. Cooperation with non-university institutions is also possible.
Doctoral Programme Economics and Management
Bielefeld Graduate School of Economics and Management (BiGSEM) offers a structured, internationally oriented doctoral programme with a strong research orientation. Doctoral candidates can choose between the profiles Economics, Finance, Management and Data Science.
