Connect network drive under Windows 10

Network drives can be accessed both from the campus network and externally. However, the computer must first be connected to the Bielefeld University network via LAN, WLAN or VPN.

Connect network drive

Example: Connection with the P drive

A network drive can be connected from the command prompt (cmd) with the following command:

net use p: \\fs-home.uni-bielefeld.de\home\"username" /User:ad\"username"

After confirming the entry and entering the BITS password, the drive is available. The previously selected letter (in the above example "p") is used as the drive name.

Alternatively, the network drive can also be connected via the Explorer. See the following steps:

1.

Via Windows Explorer (key combination Windows key+E), you can expand the menu bar in the top right-hand corner using the arrow.

2.

In the advanced menu, click on Easy access > Map as drive.

3.

Details of the integration are defined in this window.

Drive:
freely selectable

Folder:
\\fs-home.uni-bielefeld.de\home\"username"

"username" stands for the respective BITS user name.

Click on Finish to establish the connection.

Network drives of departments/departments:
If you do not know the correct path for a group drive, ask the responsible IT supervisor.

4.

The following is entered there:

User name: ad\BITS user name
Password: BITS password

Click OK to confirm the entries.

View in Explorer

After a successful connection, the network drive opens in a new window. The previously selected letter is used as the drive name.

Disconnect network drive

A network drive can be disconnected from the command prompt (cmd) with the following command:

net use p: /delete

After confirming the entry, the drive is no longer available. The previously selected letter (in the above example "p") is used as the drive designation.

Alternatively, the network drive can also be disconnected using Windows Explorer:

All existing connections are listed under "This PC" in the "Network addresses" section.

The previously connected network drive can be disconnected again by right-clicking on it and selecting "Disconnect".
